Even if the album is slower paced, the production and the writing is great, and takes advantage of this.

And I just think it's a really beautiful album. It's such a perfect album to listen to at night in the dark. But I truly feel ghost stories ages well with time.

But i think it shows him using his vocals in ways he hasn't before. Again I can understand if that's a negative for some.

But unlike most of their previous albums, I feel Martin knows how to make his vocals blend in with the atmospheric hum of the production. Unlike past albums where he's making big leaps, his vocals are more constrained to a hum/hush as well as beautiful falsetto moments.

And his voice on this album is full of so much pain. I also feel this is one of Martins best albums lyrically and vocally. And unlike some of the pop songs on Mylo, the production has that spacey quality to it, so that it doesn't feel too out of place on the record. And while yeah the song is still a by the numbers/formulaic pop song, I'll take it any day over "Hymn for the Weekend". The only song I'm iffy on is "Sky full of Stars", but even that song works for me in the context of the album, because it's sort of like the hopefulness/ high you feel once you "get over" a relationship and finally come out of the storm. And IMO each song serves a purpose, an emotional story beat if you will. But if you actually listen to this album (especially with headphones) - it has incredible production that is layered and beautiful. I get for some, this means it's "boring" and sounds too much the same. Ghost Stories is easily one of their most cohesive albums. Not in quality, I mean as an album on the whole. But the album always came off like a b-sides collection in its structure (like studio outtakes). I can concede that Mylo has individual tracks that are incredible. The other half is stripped back acoustic tracks. As someone that grew up with Coldplay since 2000, I always felt Ghost Stories was a return to their older style but with a weird/ electronica atmospheric twist.Īnd while Viva La Vida is my personal fav album from them (just to give you an idea of where I sit on the scale of things), it was a welcome break from the stadium/ anthem rock that they had tried for two albums.Īlso personally, I still think Mylo Xyloto is their worst album.
